  TAIWAN AUTHOR'S CHILDREN'S BOOK MAKES N. Y. TIMES 'TOP 10'
Taipei, Dec. 2 (CNA)
An English-language children's book, authored and illustrated by Taiwan artist Chih-yuan Chen, has made it to the New York Times Book Review's "top 10" bestseller list, the Hsin-Yi Foundation reported Thursday. "Guji Guji, " a modern-day ugly duckling story with a reptilian twist: the title character is a crocodile raised among a family of ducks -- is the second illustrated book that Chen has published in the United States. His first, "On My Way to Buy Eggs, " another children's book, was named one of U.S. Publishers Weekly's best children's books of 2003. "Guji Guji" is the third book of Chen's that has received the Hsin-Yi Picture Book Award offered by the Hsin-Yi Foundation, which was founded by Yuen Foong Yu Paper Manufacturing Co.'s founder and is one of the most prestigious organizations in Taiwan devoted to publications and activities for children. Chen was awarded a gold medal in the illustrated book division in the 2004 Taipei International Book Fair earlier this year.

Buzz about "Guji Guji" began in late August, when the Washington Post praised its "keen humor" and the New York Times Book Review called it "hilarious." USA Today followed suit, describing it as "quietly funny...about true family values and accepting differences." "Sales skyrocketed after Daniel Pinkwater dubbed 'Guji Guji' a masterpiece on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition last month. The book is now going into its sixth printing, with more than 55,000 copies in print in just three months," said the New York Times Book Review. Now the No. 4 bestseller on Amazon's children's book listing, it has also been listed by the U.S. School Library Journal as a "must buy." An original in his own family, Guji Guji proves to himself and others that family, no matter where or what that family may be, is worth protecting and cherishing. The story has much to say about appreciating families and differences, and it will resonate with children long after the final page is turned, said the publisher's review. (By Deborah Kuo)
